I ran down the stairs to get our newest baby… a referral from a good quality city Hospital. I just had a few minutes before supper was ready and bedtime routine would start. I had read the case study and referral earlier and it looked pretty standard. Rehabilitate nutritionally in order for operation because of mass on the tongue… he needed to gain 6 pounds. Easy.
Oh, what a cute little boy… wait… he doesn’t look quite right… he looks like he has FAS, (fetal alcohol syndrome). narrow eyes… big space between them… little hands, short fingers…
CAN I HOLD HIM? HE’S BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL 2 MONTHS?
Hi sweetie… scar in his nostril from tube feeding… how could he be so skinny after 2 months of hospital… wow, the lump on his tongue is bigger than a marble…how on earth does he eat? Suck from a bottle? His legs are so skinny… and so weak. He doesn’t hold his head up…. Why is he so little? He looks like a 5 or 6 month old…
YOU MEAN HE HAS NO TROUBLE FEEDING? YOU’RE SURE OF THE BIRTHDATE? HE IS 14 MONTHS?
Hmmm…. We’ll have to see… I don’t believe what I am hearing… what is the case history… This is totally a special needs child… he’s only 10 pounds… what testing have they done? So many questions…
DID THE MOTHER DRINK? AN ALCOHOLIC? Oh my… ATTEMPT ABORTION? Oh dear…
Why isn’t that on the case study? Why has the flipping hospital referred him? Do they not see any hope for him? Do they need the bed space? What is the deal? Definitely 2nd degree malnutrition… how am I going to fatten him up? Oh baby… Jesus touch this little one.
Over the last 48 hours of intensive care of John Rey, we are truly suspecting FAS.
He cannot suck efficiently due to the mass on his tongue. He was put on heart medication without any tests done… just a suspect murmur but after I phoned the doctor they couldn’t give me any more than just a guess. His little chest isn’t round… more pointy. He is very sensitive and doesn’t eat solids, though they said he did. He has only one little tooth. He cannot hold his head up. He is extremely constipated and has a hemorrhoid. The meds make him pee all the time… so he is dehydrated but he can’t suck well enough to keep up… He hardly cries, it’s more like a whimper… and the sound of it breaks your heart. I have walked the floor with him this morning for 2 hours… he only just fell asleep.
Would you pray for this little one? Jesus can touch him. His life is precious to God, even if not to the medical community. The devil tried to destroy him… Pray that the mass will go away. Pray that he will begin to develop and that he will put on weight. Pray that we will have wisdom In caring for him.
Please. Please pray.
For love of the poor,
